Dealing With Pet Urine Really Stinks!!

Anyone who’s ever had a puppy knows that feeling of rushing home to let him outside only to find that you’re too late. Fido’s had an accident right in the middle of your living room! He didn’t mean to do it (at least you don’t think he did), but now you have a real mess to clean up. Urine stains and smells can be very stubborn! You could just leave it and sell the house. (If that’s the case, please direct the new owners to our site.) However, if you do decide to stay, we’ve got the products and steps to help you completely get rid of both the stain and smell. And it’s super easy!

  1. First, you’ll want to remove as much of the excess urine as possible. This can be done by blotting the area with dry paper towels or sucking it up using a wet/dry vac or an extractor/carpet spotter. We’d go with using an extractor/carpet spotter for two reasons: 1) It’s the fastest and most efficient, and 2) It will also be used in future steps, saving you even more time. We also recommend using a black light to make sure you’re cleaning all the spots that Fido “accidentally” hit. Sometimes animals start walking away before they’re completely done “going.” Or they see a squirrel.
  2. After you’ve removed as much of the urine as possible, soak a rag with our CleanFreak N-Zyme Enzymatic Cleaner and simply lay it over the stained area. No need to rub, scrub or blot, just let it lay over the stain. The enzymatic cleaner helps to speed chemical reactions, which will break down the odors and bacteria found in the urine and neutralize the heck out of it. Just make sure the rag stays wet for about a half hour so the N-Zyme cleaner can work its magic.
  3. Next, remove the rag and spray the entire area with our CleanFreak Pet Patrol Urine & Feces Stain Remover. This product is also an enzymatic cleaner with an added deodorizer to deal with the smell and leave the carpet smelling fresh. It is best to leave this spray on for 5-15 minutes to thoroughly soak into the stain.
  4. Then use that handy extractor/carpet spotter with cold water to remove all excess liquid from the carpet. Avoid hot water, as this can actually set the stain into your carpet permanently. If you don’t have access to a extractor/carpet spotter, you can use a wet/dry vacuum or blot with paper towels, but neither of these are as effective.
  5. Finally, you’ll want to rinse the stained areas one last time with plain cold water, which acts as the final rinse cycle like when doing laundry. Then use the extractor/carpet spotter (or the wet/dry vac or blot with paper toweling) to remove as much of the water and any remaining chemicals as possible from the carpet.

And that’s it! Super easy, right? If you want to speed the carpet drying, set up a fan or two to blow air across the area where the stains were located.

So remember, Fido loves you and just wants to make you happy. No need to be mad at him for being a puppy, he’s still learning (remember when you were a kid, before potty training?). A few smelly accidents are nothing compared to the super excited puppy greeting Fido gives you every time he sees you. It’s enough to help you forget about that…that… Stain? What stain?

Note: If you continue to see the spot after the carpet is dry, or smell the odor, repeat the steps starting with #2: the rag-soaked N-Zyme Cleaner.
