Fight the Bite: Zika Virus Prevention

The Zika virus continues to gain global attention as the number of confirmed cases grows. As the summer season approaches and mosquito season begins to peak, there is a large concern of a widespread outbreak. Knowing the facts and ways to protect yourself are the keys to Zika virus prevention.

Zika Virus Facts

The virus is transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. Currently, there are outbreaks occurring in many countries in the Americas. These areas affected by Zika continue to be monitored and updated as the virus spreads. The common symptoms associated with the virus are fever, joint pain, rash, headache and red eyes. Most people don’t require medical attention and fight off the infection within a week after being bitten by an infected mosquito. For pregnant women though, there is a risk for birth defects and developmental disabilities.

As of now, there is no vaccine for the Zika virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the best way to prevent the disease is by avoiding mosquito bites. If you are going to be outside in an area known for mosquitoes you should always make sure to wear insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, stay in an air conditioned place with screens and use permethrin to treat clothing and gear.

Controlling Mosquitoes at Home

Besides personal protection from mosquitoes, it’s also important to protect your home to reduce bites to family and guests. Here are ways to prevent and treat the mosquito population around your home.

  • Eliminate areas of standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
  • Install or repair window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home.
  • Use a professional grade flying insect repellent to control mosquitoes flying in and around the home.
  • Use bug zappers to attract and eliminate mosquitoes.

While there are currently no vaccines or treatments developed for Zika, you are able to keep you and your family safe by avoiding mosquito bites and with proper home pest control. CleanFreak.com also offers solutions for roaches and ants as well as wasps and hornets.
